Epic Games CEO Confirms ‘Huge Pivot’ to Retool Teams for AI – Unite.AI
ShareShareShareShareShare

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said on October 12, 2026 that the company has a company-wide reorganization underway aimed at artificial intelligence. “We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration,” Sweeney wrote in a post on his verified X account.

Sweeney wrote that the aim of the shift is not to perform the same work with fewer people, but to enable everyone at Epic to build more and better things, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.

The confirmation followed an October 7, 2026 post in which Sweeney said seller revenue on Fab, Epic’s marketplace for 3D assets, increased significantly in September. He attributed the rise to AI acceleration, writing that it has produced more demand for content and that many developers are using AI assistants to build scenes while buying building blocks from Fab.

March Layoffs and Epic’s Stated Position on AI

In a March 24, 2026 note to employees published on Epic’s website, Sweeney said the company was laying off more than 1,000 employees. He cited a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025 and said Epic was spending significantly more than it was earning. He wrote that the layoffs, together with more than $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles, put the company in a more stable position.

Addressing the subject directly in that note, Sweeney wrote that “the layoffs aren’t related to AI,” adding that to the extent AI improves productivity, Epic wants as many developers as possible building content and technology. The note stated that affected employees would receive severance packages including at least four months of base pay, with more based on tenure, six months of Epic-paid healthcare coverage in the United States, accelerated stock-option vesting through January 2027, and equity exercise options extended for up to two years.

Epic’s 2025 Loci Acquisition

Epic had already added AI capability through acquisition. On April 2, 2025, the company announced that Loci, a developer of AI technology for 3D content understanding and tagging, had joined Epic Games.

Epic said Loci’s computer vision models tag 3D assets automatically, precisely, and at scale, replacing a manual tagging process that made content labor-intensive to categorize and difficult to discover. Epic said it planned to integrate Loci’s technology to improve search, sharing, and discoverability in Fab, to automatically index custom assets in Unreal Editor for Fortnite, and to use Loci’s 3D similarity detection for IP protection and moderation across its ecosystem. Lucia Specia, director of Epic’s Machine Learning Solutions team, said Epic was looking for ways to automate artist workflows and improve the discoverability of content.

Unreal Engine 6 AI Roadmap

Epic laid out its longer-term engine plans in a June 22, 2026 post, The road to Unreal Engine 6, written by Marcus Wassmer, who leads Epic’s development team. Wassmer said that over the next two years Epic will unify Unreal Engine 5 and Unreal Editor for Fortnite into a single product, Unreal Engine 6.

Among the changes, Epic said it is building development-pipeline features including an MCP with integrations for Claude, Gemini, and other models, which it described as creativity and productivity multipliers that let teams focus on essential creative and technical work instead of time-consuming manual tasks. Epic said it sees LLMs, generative AI models, and tools such as Claude and Codex playing a central role in building content faster while maintaining creative control. The company said it is exposing a broad set of engine capabilities through the MCP protocol so developers can mix and match leading-edge models and build custom integrations, and that it is improving the Epic Developer Assistant as an optional turnkey solution available to all by default. On model-assisted creation, Epic said the approach could tighten iteration loops and reduce manual setup of levels, character rigs, particle systems, skinning bone weights, and lighting.

The post also said Epic had recently opened broad usage of code generation and AI analysis across its backend, engine, and game development engineering teams. Epic reported particular success with engineers writing custom tools for their own work, fast code indexing that helps LLMs handle large codebases such as Unreal Engine, incident-response analysis, automated root-cause crash and CIS job-failure analysis, automated test generation, and accelerated backend service development, while noting that most of those use cases do not yet generate mainline Unreal Engine code.

Epic said it is targeting an Unreal Engine 6 Early Access release at the end of 2027, with the full release coming 12 to 18 months later, and that a UE6 development stream is publicly visible on GitHub.
