CAROLINE WOODS: Video games just made Wall Street history.
Electronic Arts – the maker of Madden, The Sims, EA FC, and Battlefield – is going private in a $55 billion deal. That’s set to be the biggest leveraged buyout ever.
Here’s what’s happening: Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, private equity giant Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s fund Affinity Partners are paying $210 per share in cash. EA shareholders get bought out, and the company won’t trade on the Nasdaq anymore.
Why does this matter to Main Street? For one, it shows just how valuable gaming has become. These aren’t niche hobbies – they’re billion-dollar businesses shaping culture, sports, and even Hollywood.
Going private also means EA won’t answer to Wall Street every quarter. That gives the company freedom to take bigger risks – fresh franchises, new tech, and potentially more global growth.
If anyone doubted gaming’s power in the global economy, this $55 billion deal just hit play.
