U.S. stocks moved higher Friday, but major indexes were still on pace for a losing week.
Tech shares advanced, helping the S&P 500 into positive territory after three consecutive days of declines. Apple shares rose, trimming their losses for the week.
Signs of U.S. economic strength have propelled the WSJ Dollar Index up more than 2% over the past month. It slipped Friday after comments by Federal Reserve officials added to expectations that the central bank will keep interest rates on hold this month.
Stocks rose. Major indexes pared their weekly losses, let higher by the Nasdaq. They fell in recent days after strong economic data fanned inflation fears.
Apple shares turned higher. The stock was recently up a bit more than 1%. It had dropped more than 6% this week through Thursday on concerns about Apple’s business in China.
Kroger’s shares rose. The grocer announced a settlement associated with opioid-related claims, as well as divestiture plans associated with its planned merger with Albertson’s.
Bond yields slipped. Ten-year Treasury yields were around 4.252%, after settling at 4.260% Thursday.
Natural-gas prices rose. Workers at two major natural-gas plants run by Chevron in Australia began industrial action. The gas-price jump was most pronounced in Europe.
