‘DATA-ISM’ opens the door to a new way of making decisions based more on science and data analysis than gut feel, said Steve Lohr, author of ‘DATA-ISM.’ Lohr said IBM is making a huge bet on big data, yet it will face a growing number of competitors across a wide number of industries. He said big data is being used primarily for marketing purposes now to help companies better understand the buying tendencies of their customers, but that will evolve. Finally, Lohr said individuals should not fear the big data revolution due to the personalized service they are getting, but should have reservations about it encroaching on their privacy.
