The Department of Justice announced on Monday it plans on charging individuals in the Chinese military with hacking U.S. companies for trade secrets. Five Chinese officials in Shanghai working for the People’s Liberation Army allegedly hacked into U.S. companies’ systems, including Alcoa, Westinghouse Electric and U.S. Steel. This criminal cyber-espionage case is the first of its kind. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says “this is a tactic that the United States government categorically denounces. This case should serve as a wake-up call to the seriousness of the ongoing cyber-threat.” The charges are being brought up in a federal court in Pennsylvania.
