June 6, 1944: The D-Day invasion, when U.S. forces and Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy during World War II, was the largest amphibious assault in military history. NBC News’ Kerry Sanders explains how news of the invasion – a turning point in the war – and its heavy toll traveled around the world at the time. He speaks to survivors of that fateful day as they returned decades later to France. When asked about what we owe them now, their responses are full of humility: they’re no heroes, they say, but did a job that needed to be done. They want us to understand the cost of that day and remember those who died.
