Paying off credit card debt is an important factor in determining one’s credit score and ability to take on more debt, however not all parts of the country deal with their credit debt in the same way. CreditCards.com compiled information from the top twenty-five cities across the country to uncover the different credit card treatment trends on a city-by-city basis. While citizens of coastal cities like San Francisco, Boston, and Washington DC payoff their credit card balances quickly, people from cities in the Southwest like San Antonio, Dallas, and Atlanta are less prompt about paying off their credit card balances on average. San Franciscans take only nine months on average to pay off their credit card balances, while San Antonians took seven months longer than San Franciscans on average to pay off their credit card balances. The people of San Bernardino, California had the lowest credit card balances on average at $4,137 and the Washingtonians from the nation’s capital had the largest average credit card balances on average at $5,046. Behind Washington DC, the people from Dallas had the largest credit card balances on average. Somewhat surprisingly, Detroit, a city which filed for bankruptcy as recently as 2013, was third among the top American cities for having the lowest average credit card balances.
