AT&T is looking to buy Time Warner for $85 billion. But the Department of Justice is trying to block the deal to limit concentration in the media space. The deal is headed to trial in Washington DC – some 17 months after AT&T first announced the deal back on October 22, 2016.
How have the stocks of both companies performed over this period?
AT&T is down just under 1%.
Time Warner is up 8%.
The S&P 500 is up 28%
The uncertainty over this deal has kept share prices for both companies on a tight leash.
By acquiring Time Warner, AT&T is better positioned to compete with Netflix. Time Warner owns HBO and other premium content channels.
