Cathie Wood achieved rock-star celebrity investor status with outsized gains from her flagship ARK Innovation fund in 2020 and early 2021, but her funds then fell in value. How much is she worth now?
Transcript:
Since founding ARK Invest in 2014, Cathie Wood has built an empire boasting several ETFs and billions of dollars in assets under her management.
But what is Cathie Wood’s net worth?
Wood is known for betting on what she calls ‘disruptive innovation.’
Her company, ARK, invests in cutting-edge technology like AI, robotics and genomics. Some of ARK’s top holdings include Tesla, Zoom, and Roku.
ARK, which stands for Active Research Knowledge, strategically buys shares in publicly traded companies. And some of its ETFs are listed on the all-electronic New York Stock Exchange. As of March 2024, ARK managed seven funds, totaling $13.5 billion in net assets. Its biggest fund is the $8 billion ARK Innovation ETF which owns Tesla, Roku, Coinbase, and Meta.
Wood makes most of her money managing these ARK funds.
How it works: when people invest, ARK charges a fee.
Since she owns an estimated 50-75 percent of ARK, when Wood’s investments grow, so does her own wealth. However, Wood is also impacted when ARK doesn’t do so well. After rising to record highs in early 2021, the flagship ARK innovation ETF dropped back to 2017 levels in early 2023, as higher interest rates weighed on big tech. The fund has also underperformed in the stock market at large since it was first listed in 2014. Most media outlets report that her net worth is between $250 to $300 million dollars.
While Wood’s wealth will change on the ups and downs of each individual investment decision, the name she built for herself in the highly volatile world of big tech seems here to stay.
