Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal created ripples by breaking news that Apple is developing an electric car — an iCar, which could take on the likes of Tesla. The company which crossed the $700 billion valuation mark last week, can do whatever it wants. But the Journal reports that it has several hundred employees working on a electric vehicle that looks like a minivan. The code name for the project is ‘Titan.’ It could be several years until the car goes mainstream, if it comes to market at all. But people familiar with the matter say the company has deployed enough manpower, devoted enough resources, and hired top talent from companies like Mercedes Benz to suggest that something along the lines of automobile manufacturing is underway at Apple. There is another theory out there: That Apple isn’t developing a whole car, but a smart dashboard that will go in many makes of cars. In other words, the tech behemoth has deployed an army to extending the iPhone experience into cars. Recall, last year, Apple bought touch-screen and voice-activated navigation to cars with a product called CarPlay. The Independent this morning reports that, so far, Ferrari is the only one of the 31 auto manufacturers cited by Apple that’s currently offering the system in new cars.
