Birmingham Alabama Mayor William Bell says there’s a building boom underway in the city, with residents and businesses moving back into the downtown area. The mayor says the city is attracting new businesses by streamlining its tax and permit processes, and its cut in half the business license tax. Mayor Bell says the city’s investment in the automotive industry is paying off with several automakers -including Mercedes Benz and Honda – expanding production. The city is also investing in the University of Alabama – Birmingham to help create new businesses. Mayor Bell says the recent riots in Baltimore ‘can happen anywhere.’ Birmingham is currently planning to build a human rights research center in the city, and has developed sensitivity training for its local police department.
