The Federal Communication Commission’s net neutrality rules officially go into effect Friday. The Open Internet rules are designed to ensure that consumers and businesses have access to a fast, fair and open Internet, according to the FCC. They’ll be in effect whether consumers are using smartphones or desktop computers, fixed or mobile broadband service. Some of the highlights of the rules include the prevention of blocking from broadband providers of legal content you would like to access. The rules also prohibit throttling — meaning broadband providers cannot impair or degrade lawful Internet traffic for reasons based on its content or services. Also, broadband providers will be prevented from paid prioritization. That will keep broadband providers from favoring some lawful Internet traffic over others, or creating ‘fast lanes.’ According to the FCC, it will also ban them from prioritizing content and services of their affiliates.
