American Apparel has some big payments coming due, but it lacks both the cash and the borrowing power to make them. And lenders are reluctant to deal with founder Dov Charney because of his past behavior. Sexual harassment suits, undocumented workers, a copyright dispute with Woody Allen and American Apparel’s often racy ads are all coming back to haunt the company at a crucial time. Of course, there’s a lot of alternative financing available now, and Charney has escaped these jams before.
