CAROLINE WOODS: Amazon Web Services is back online after a major outage that took down parts of the internet.
AWS – which powers everything from Netflix to government websites – suffered widespread disruptions in its main U.S. East region. The issue stemmed from a Domain Name System (or DNS) failure that rippled across more than 70 AWS services, including Amazon.com, Alexa, and even some customer support systems.
Amazon says all services returned to normal operations Monday evening, though some systems are still processing backlogs.
The company hasn’t said exactly what caused the failure but promises a full post-event summary soon.
AWS controls about one-third of the global cloud market meaning when AWS goes down, much of the internet feels it.
But for now, the clouds have cleared – and AWS is back up and running.
