Worried that AI could take your job? Well, those concerns might be justified. Amazon is warning its employees that the company will have a smaller workforce in the future because of Generative AI and agents.
In a memo to employees, CEO Andy Jassy said the tech giant “will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.” He added: “It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce.”
Some of those AI agents haven’t even been built yet but Jassy warned “They’re coming, and coming fast.” In turn, he said employees should learn how to use AI tools and figure out “how to get more done with scrappier teams.”
Amazon has already laid off about 30-thousand employees since 2022 but still has roughly 1.5 million employees worldwide.
