The country’s second-largest employer is reportedly gearing up for its biggest workplace shift yet – one that could replace more than half a million U.S. jobs over the next decade.
According to The New York Times, internal strategy documents show Amazon believes automation could let it avoid hiring 600,000 workers by 2033, even as sales are expected to double.
The company’s robotics team reportedly wants to automate about 75% of operations – which could help Amazon roughly 12 and a half billion dollars over two years.
The Times says Amazon is even strategizing how to “control the narrative” in communities that might lose jobs – focusing on technician roles and local outreach.
Amazon disputes the report, saying the documents don’t reflect its overall hiring strategy and that it still plans to hire 250,000 workers this holiday season.
But experts warn – if these plans move forward – one of America’s biggest job creators could soon become one of its biggest job replacers.
