A Robo-Advisor Is the Lowest-Friction Way to Start Investing

A robo-advisor automatically builds and manages a diversified investment portfolio based on your goals and risk tolerance, rebalancing as markets move. Fees are low, typically around 0.25% annually, and the minimum to start is often $0. If you know you should be investing but haven’t started, open one and let it run.

What stops most would-be investors isn’t a lack of money. It’s the pile of decisions between them and their first dollar in the market: which brokerage, which funds, how much of each, when to buy, when to rebalance. Every decision is another chance to stall.

A robo-advisor collapses that pile into one move. Open the account, and the service takes over from there. The setup is a short questionnaire covering your goals, your timeline, and how you’d react if your balance dropped 20%. From those answers, the service assembles a mix of low-cost index ETFs and keeps it on target. Dividends get reinvested. Drift gets corrected. Some platforms even sell losers in taxable accounts to trim your tax bill, a perk called tax-loss harvesting.

The cost stays small. At the typical 0.25% annual fee, you pay about $25 per year for every $10,000 invested. Human advisors commonly charge around 1%, four times as much, and many won’t take clients without six figures to manage.

Getting started takes one evening. Betterment has no account minimum, Wealthfront asks for $500, and most major brokerages now run their own versions. Pick one and answer the questionnaire honestly instead of claiming more risk tolerance than you have. Then schedule an automatic transfer, even $50 a month, so investing continues without a fresh decision each time. Most robos let you open a Roth IRA, a traditional IRA, or a plain taxable account. If you have no retirement account yet, the Roth is usually the right place to start.

If your employer matches 401(k) contributions, capture the full match before funding a robo account. A dollar-for-dollar match beats anything a robo-advisor will earn you.

The winning portfolio isn’t the cleverest one. It’s the one that gets funded every month whether you’re paying attention or not.
