There could be a stumbling block on the road to completion of AT&T’s $67 billion bid for satellite broadcaster DIRECTV, and it may come as a surprise that it’s the National Football League. One of the most valuable assets in DIRECTV’s stable of programming is the Sunday Ticket package that allows the broadcaster to television out-of-market NFL games, an option that’s foreclosed to other programming arms such as cable operations. DIRECTV’s agreement with the NFL expires after the upcoming season, probably before the two companies close on the merger, and AT&T could walk away.
