George ‘Tex’ Rickard was the first person to turn boxing into a big business. That was back in the early part of the 20th century. Throughout the 30s, 40s and 50s, the sport of boxing has become one of Americas most loved spectacle sports. In the mid-1950s, an average of 17 million Americans watched Friday night fights regularly. Through this period, the sport helped sell many TV sets in the early day of programming. Boxing lexicon has become part of our popular culture with the 1975 ‘Thrilla In Manila’, the fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. On Saturday May 2 the Las Vegas MGM Grand will host this century’s first spectacle fight between undefeated Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
