A cash back credit card pays you a percentage of every purchase you’d make anyway: groceries, gas, utilities, and subscriptions. Used on everyday spending and paid in full each month, a good cash back card returns $300-600 or more per year with no behavior change required. Never carry a balance, because interest charges erase every dollar of rewards immediately.

Most people run their groceries and gas through a debit card that pays nothing back. Same purchases, same checkout line, zero return. A cash back card quietly fixes that, and the only real work is deciding which card and setting it up once.

The cards come in two flavors. Flat-rate cards pay a fixed percentage on every purchase, typically 1.5% to 2%. Category cards pay more in specific buckets like groceries or gas, often 3% or higher, with a lower standard rate everywhere else. Put $1,500 a month of normal household spending on a 2% flat-rate card and you collect $360 a year. Match a category card to your single biggest expense and the number climbs.

One rule holds the system together. Pay the statement balance in full, every month. Typical card interest runs about ten times the best rewards rate, so a single carried balance can wipe out months of earnings. Watch for spending creep too. A card that nudges you into purchases you’d skip with cash costs more than it pays. The no-behavior-change promise depends on treating the card like a debit card. If the money isn’t already sitting in checking, the purchase doesn’t happen.

Start with a no-annual-fee card so every dollar of rewards is profit. Move your recurring bills onto it: groceries, gas, utilities, phone, streaming. Then set autopay to the full statement balance, not the minimum, so the discipline runs itself even in months you forget to look. Cards with annual fees can out-earn free ones, but only when heavy category spending clears the fee first. Run that math before you upgrade.

Redeem as a statement credit or a deposit into savings, and check the running total each December. It’s the easiest few hundred dollars you’ll earn all year.
