A dedicated business credit card makes expense tracking and tax preparation easier, builds business credit separately from your personal score, and earns rewards on spending your business was going to do anyway. Open one even without a registered company. Self-employment income is enough to qualify.

Most freelancers and side hustlers run every expense through the same personal card they use for groceries. That works until tax season, when you’re scrolling through twelve months of statements at midnight to figure out whether that March charge was a client lunch or a date night.

The barrier to fixing this is lower than most people assume. Card issuers don’t require an LLC or a registered business name. A sole proprietor applies with their own legal name as the business name and a Social Security number instead of an employer ID. Freelance income, gig work, and side hustle earnings all count.

Approval rests mostly on your personal credit, and nearly all small business cards carry a personal guarantee, so you’re liable for the balance either way. What changes is the reporting. Most issuers send activity to business credit bureaus rather than your personal report. Heavy business spending stops inflating your personal utilization, and your business starts building a credit file of its own.

Applying takes about ten minutes. Use your legal name, your SSN, and an honest estimate of your self-employment income. Pick a card whose rewards match where your business money already goes, whether that’s software, supplies, gas, or advertising. Flat-rate cash back keeps it simple. Category bonuses pay more if your spending is concentrated.

Then enforce one rule without exception. Every business expense goes on the business card, and nothing personal ever touches it. Come April, your deduction list is your card statement.

If you earned even a dollar of self-employment income this year, you can apply today. Open the card before your next business purchase, not during your next tax scramble.
