There’s no getting around the fact that globalization and technology have been disrupting American jobs and will keep disrupting them in the future. Zoe Baird, CEO of the Markle Foundation and contributor to ‘America’s Moment’, said Americans should take advantage of this dislocation in the economy, not fear it. ‘A recent study said as many as 47% of jobs are going to be disrupted by technology in the next 15 years,’ said Baird, one of the leaders of the Rework America group behind the publication of America’s Moment. ‘It’s our belief, contrary to conventional wisdom, that we can use globalization and technology to create strong, growing middle skill jobs for Americans and that everyone can benefit in this new 21st century economy.’ Globalization has its advantages, especially in terms of bringing down the prices Americans pay for their goods. Still, it is not simple to reconcile the easing of global trade with a push to increase domestic manufacturing. Baird, however, says it can be done and is being done. ‘A lot of the talent and skills that we need to make advanced manufactured products we have here in the U.S.,’ said Baird. ‘Some companies like Boeing are bringing their production home because of the need to have the skills close at hand with the manufacturing. Corning Glass did this and that led to their being able to do the Gorilla Glass for Apple so it has really worked for American companies.’
