Are we paying more than we should for airline tickets? The Department of Justice is looking into that. The airlines, American (AAL), Delta (DAL), United Continental (UAL) confirmed they are part of the investigation and are cooperating. The Department of Justice has demanded copies of all communications among the airlines, analysts and shareholders. Stocks of the airlines all fell on news of the investigation. At issue is if the airlines are working together to reduce capacity to keep ticket prices high, even as fuel prices have fallen in the past year. The investigation comes at a time when the U.S. airline industry is enjoying some of its strongest profits ever after years of consolidation. TheStreet’s Jane King has details from the Nasdaq Marketsite in New York.
