It was a big night for Amazon (AMZN) and the transgender community at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. The e-commerce giant won its first Emmy for its new original television series ‘Transparent.’ The series stars actor Jeffrey Tambor who reveals a big secret to his family–that he is transitioning to become a woman. After accepting his Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Tambor dedicated his award to the transgender community, saying, ‘Thank you for patience, thank you for courage, thank you for your stories, thank you for your inspiration, thank you for letting us be part of the change.’ Director Jill Soloway also won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. ‘Transparent’ took away 2 Emmys at the ceremony after being nominated for a total of 11. The series is currently available to Amazon Prime subscribers paying an annual fee of $99. According to The New York Times, Amazon last year said it had plans to invest about $100 million in creating original content. But Amazon wasn’t the only one getting all the attention at the awards ceremony. The company faced some tough competition from other streaming services like Time Warner’s (TWX) HBO and Netflix (NFLX). Overall, Amazon’s first Emmy was a big win for CEO Jeff Bezos making the company a key player in original programming. TheStreet’s U-Jin Lee reports in New York.
