Making AI Finance Tools Work for You – Unite.AI
ShareShareShareShareShare

A designer in Mexico City invoices a client in New York in dollars, gets paid into a digital wallet, and covers her rent in pesos. Until recently, she found out what a month of work was actually worth only after the money had landed and been converted, by which point the exchange rate had already done its damage.

Over a year, that uncertainty adds up. A contractor who quotes in one currency and budgets in another is running a small treasury operation without a finance team behind her. She has to decide when to convert, set money aside for a tax authority in one country while her clients sit in another, and explain to a local bank why every deposit arrives from abroad. Each of those decisions used to be made with old information.

That is the part AI has changed fastest. “A few years ago, a contractor invoicing in USD, getting paid in a wallet, and spending in pesos had no real-time view of what any of that meant,” says Stephan Tschabold, Chief Compliance & Risk Officer at Ontop, which handles payments for remote contractors. People learned their real purchasing power after the fact. Today, the same worker can see it as it moves.

Much of the industry’s AI effort, though, is not pointed here. At the large remittance and payments companies, Tschabold says, the 2026 investment is mostly internal, according to McKinsey, aimed at running operations more cheaply and shipping products faster. He cites an idea gaining ground in payments commentary: AI’s real job in a cross-border transfer is to make an existing trust corridor computable, by reconciling names, transliterations and intent, and it cannot create trust that was never there. For an individual worker, that means the tools on her phone have become much better at reading her situation than at changing the systems underneath it.

For the growing number of people who earn this way, the result is uneven. AI-driven finance tools now help a great deal in some areas and very little in others. Tschabold has a clear view of where that line sits today, and it points to a handful of practical habits worth building.

Lean on AI for Visibility

The strongest case for these tools is what Tschabold calls the “seeing” side of the problem. Cash-flow forecasting, automatic spend categorization and alerts on when to convert currency give workers a live picture of their money across several currencies. He puts tax-readiness features and fee guidance tuned to a person’s own payment patterns in the same category.

“That’s shipping today and it’s genuinely useful,” he says. For a contractor, the practical step is to switch on FX alerts and forecasting wherever a platform offers them, and to check the monthly forecast before deciding when to move money between currencies.

Keep Your Own Records Across Borders

The tools fall short on anything that spans more than one legal system. “Most AI financial tools were built for a single-country user, one currency, one tax authority, one bank,” Tschabold says.

“The intelligence layer is ahead of the infrastructure layer.” An app can show what is happening to income in real time and still offer no help reconciling obligations owed in two countries.

The same gap shows up when people relocate. Someone with five years of consistent, provable income can look unbanked or high-risk on arrival, because their earnings, tax records and credit history sit in separate systems that never talk to each other. Tschabold sees a portable financial identity as the biggest opportunity nobody has yet closed.

Until someone does, workers are better off assembling that file themselves: invoices, tax filings, platform payment histories and bank statements kept together, in a form they could hand to a lender in a new country.

Understand Why Payments Get Flagged

Older rule-based fraud systems flagged anything unfamiliar, from a payment out of a new country to a transfer at an odd hour, which Tschabold notes is “exactly what a legitimate contractor’s normal life looks like.” The result was years of false declines and frozen accounts for people who had done nothing wrong.

Newer models weigh velocity, device data, relationship history and behavioral consistency, and issuers using them report fewer false positives. That makes it worth asking a provider how it screens payments before signing up.

Consistency also helps: sticking to the same devices and a predictable invoicing rhythm gives a behavioral model less to question. Expect stricter identity checks at onboarding as well, since synthetic identities and deepfake voice scams are growing alongside cross-border fraud.

Use the Rules That Now Exist

This next February, the EU AI Act’s obligations for high-risk systems will take effect, a category that covers fraud detection, AML monitoring and credit scoring. Those scores now have to be explainable, auditable and open to human override, and the institution deploying the model carries the liability. A worker whose account is frozen or whose loan is refused by a model has grounds to ask for an explanation and a human review.

Protection is uneven, though. Europe’s revised payments rulebook, which shifts liability for authorized push-payment scams onto providers, is not expected to fully land until late 2027, and FinCEN in the US is still working through an AML proposal. “A worker’s payment can be legally high-risk AI in one jurisdiction and functionally unregulated for the identical use case in another, in the same corridor,” Tschabold says. Independent workers rarely have an employer or relationship manager to argue their case, so it pays to know which regime each provider answers to.

Keep a Human on the Big Decisions

Tschabold considers the fully autonomous AI financial advisor mostly hype for now. Pattern recognition is capable enough, but nobody has settled who is responsible when an algorithm’s cross-border tax or investment call goes badly. Visa, Mastercard and Alipay are all building infrastructure for agent-to-agent payments, yet even they describe mainstream adoption as some way off.

The sensible setup in the meantime is AI that flags a better moment to convert or surfaces a tax obligation early, with the worker approving anything consequential. Polish is a poor guide when choosing a provider. “The deeper risk is that speed gets mistaken for credibility,” he says. The more useful question to put to any platform is who answers for it when something breaks, because in his view “AI-powered” still has to mean human-accountable.
