Google, Cathay Pacific Expand Contrail Avoidance Trials in Asia-Pacific – Unite.AI

Google is partnering with Cathay Pacific to test AI-powered contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flights across Asia-Pacific, the company announced on September 7, 2026, reporting that early trial flights reduced the warming impact of contrails by an estimated 40%.

Cathay Pacific is Google’s first commercial airline partner in Asia to test contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul routes, which the announcement defines as flights lasting more than 16 hours and often spanning 13,000 kilometers (8,000 miles) or more. Google described Asia-Pacific as the world’s fastest-growing aviation market.

The operational trial targeted more than 100 flights across Cathay Pacific’s network, and more than 80 of those flights followed contrail-avoidance routes. Google’s satellite imagery analysis estimated that those flights reduced the warming impact of contrails by roughly 40%. The Hong Kong–Singapore corridor was among the routes tested, because flights in that airspace frequently encounter conditions conducive to persistent contrail formation. According to the trial analysis, interventions on that single route accounted for more than 50% of the trial’s total emissions reductions.

How the System Reaches the Cockpit

The concept is straightforward in theory, Google said: aircraft adjust their altitude slightly to steer clear of cold, humid atmospheric zones where warming contrails are likely to form, much as pilots navigate around turbulence. Pilots and flight teams routinely make such small, planned adjustments for a variety of operational reasons, always within established safety parameters, and the adjustments are not expected to affect passengers or the safety of the flight, the company said.

In practice, the approach requires giving flight teams actionable data long before an aircraft leaves the gate and then feeding that data to the cockpit. Google’s system combines AI predictions, satellite imagery, and weather intelligence to pinpoint contrail-forming zones in advance, allowing dispatchers and pilots to plan slight altitude shifts around them. In the air, Cathay Pacific connects the dynamic forecasts directly to the flight deck through in-flight Wi-Fi and its proprietary Electronic Flight Folder, giving pilots live insights alongside usual operational metrics without interrupting standard cockpit workflows.

Contrail Science and Earlier Trials

Contrails are the thin, white streaks that form behind airplanes when they fly through cold, humid air, as water vapor condenses around tiny soot particles and other pollutants emitted by jet engines. Most dissipate quickly, but some persist and spread into cloud-like formations that trap heat in the atmosphere. Google cited an IPCC assessment attributing roughly one-third of aviation’s total climate impact to contrails. According to Google Research’s Project Contrails page, nighttime contrails are more warming than daytime ones because they trap heat without reflecting incoming sunlight.

Google’s contrail work has moved from research models into live airline operations over the past several years. In trials with American Airlines, pilots flew 70 test flights over six months using Google’s AI-based predictions, and satellite imagery analysis found the predictions reduced contrails by 54%, Google Research reported. Flights that avoided contrails burned 2% more fuel, which Google estimated would translate to 0.3% more fuel when scaled across an airline’s fleet, putting contrail-avoidance costs in the range of $5 to $25 per ton of CO2 equivalent. Using IPCC figures, Google’s team estimated the reduction in contrail warming was 20 times greater than the additional CO2 from the extra fuel burned.

The Asia-Pacific trial follows Operation Blue Skies, announced on August 18, 2026, in which Google partnered with the UK Government and aviation organizations to run what it described as the world’s first state-backed trial avoiding contrails at the scale of an entire oceanic airspace. That 30-month program operates within Shanwick airspace, the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor, which accounts for approximately 5% of global contrail warming, and consists of two operational trials each lasting about four months. The consortium includes air navigation provider NATS, nonprofit Contrails.org, Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, and the Met Office, with co-funding from industry partners and the Department for Transport through the ATI Programme. Google UK is participating pro bono, contributing £1.4 million in-kind through AI research expertise, engineering time, and computing infrastructure.

Second Phase and Research Partnership

Google said it is now scaling the Cathay Pacific partnership into a larger second phase of trial flights and is also partnering with Contrails.org, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to advancing the science of contrail mitigation. The trials are intended to build a broader understanding of how contrail avoidance could work across different operating environments on Asia and transpacific routes while contributing to global contrail research.

The company described contrail mitigation as one of the most immediately available, scalable, and cost-effective ways to reduce aviation’s climate footprint, noting it can begin with today’s aircraft and fuel. Google said it hopes that advancing open contrail research with partners will accelerate progress in contrail science.
