With the Federal Communications Commission voting in favor of net neutrality on Thursday, reclassifying broadband as a utility under Title II of the Communications Act, the winners and losers of the new rules might surprise you. While one might think Internet service providers like Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and others who have long argued against such rules stand to lose, they could fare better than expected. As more emerging companies begin to operate online, the Internet will grow — giving Internet service providers even more business. One of the surefire winners of net neutrality is expected to be the consumer, as the new rules are aimed at protecting consumers from Internet service providers obstructing what they can do online.
