Cherie Blair, Founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, says women running for President of the United States are only part of the success of breaking through the glass ceiling. Blair says they need to win elections. Right now, Blair says only about two in ten elected officials around the world are women. The numbers for female access to education and healthcare are higher, but in government and corporations the numbers are much lower. Blair says closing the gender gap requires more than just closing the wage gap, it also requires businesses to rethink how they can be more flexible to attract a more diverse workforce. Blair said she fundamentally disagrees with former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson who said there may be some jobs which are not suitable for a woman when she becomes a mother. She said, ‘I think it’s not a question of women changing to meet the jobs. It’s a question of changing the job requirements to meet the needs of parents and of men and women as people who need to be more than just wage slaves…And, we need to do more to devise work life balances which actually fit with the reality of the world today.’ TheStreet’s Rhonda Schaffler has details from the Milken Global Conference in Los Angeles.
