Institutional Shareholder Services has reversed its previous position and now backs an $8.7 billion merger between Family Dollar Stores Inc. and Dollar Tree Inc., which could leave rival suitor Dollar General Corp. without a dealmaking partner. Family Dollar shareholders are scheduled to vote on the cash and stock merger with Dollar Tree on Jan. 22, and Dollar General says it will make a statement before the vote. The Deal’s Scott Stuart reported that Dollar General’s inability to assuage anti-trust fears over the last four months should raise serious concerns, although it seems some Family Dollar shareholders are still hoping for a higher deal price than what Dollar Tree is offering.
