General Motors (GM) is making it easier for drivers to put their phones down and keep their eyes on the road. The automaker is teaming up with both Google’s (GOOGL) Android Auto and Apple’s (AAPL) CarPlay to make navigating apps much easier. GM’s Chief Infotainment Officer said, ‘the user experience in a phone is very much intended to absorb you into the phone. That’s the exact opposite of what you want to do in a car…we worked closely with them to evolve their experience to be less smartphone like and more car like.’ The new app experience will be available in all 2016 model Chevy cars and trucks. The 2016 models will start hitting showrooms in late June. Abram said, ‘It’s bigger icons. It’s making sure that you can just glance at something. A lot of use of steering wheel controls and voice activation to make sure that those applications that you’ve always wanted to use in your car, but might have been surreptitiously linked are now safe and available in the vehicle.’ Abram said connectivity is something customers crave.
