It was removed from the U.S. App Store in 2020.
Transcript: In an epic about-face by Apple, Fortnite will be returning to the U.S. App Store for the first time in five years.
The game was removed in 2020 after the game’s creator, Epic Games, tried to circumvent the 30% fee Apple charges developers for in-app purchases. It instead linked out to its own website in order to avoid the fees.
In April, a judge ruled that Apple was not allowed to charge developers for purchases that users made on its outside website, and Epic Games asked for Fortnite to be reinstated in the U.S.
But despite meeting approval requirements for being added to the App Store, Apple dragged its feet on the decision — ultimately prompting a judge to force Apple to allow the game, or explain why it wouldn’t be reinstated.
The fees Apple brings in from the App Store are an integral part of its Services business. That also includes advertising, AppleCare warranties, payment, and subscriptions. Apple reported roughly $27 billion in revenue from its Services arm last quarter.
That’ll do it for your daily briefing. From New York City, I’m Kelsey Barberio with TheStreet.
