The U.S. is well behind Europe and China when it comes to turning waste into energy and this needs to be rectified, said Stephen Jones, CEO of Covanta. Jones added that the U.S. sends 250 million tons of waste into landfills where it emits methane and we can reduce this greenhouse gas by using that waste to produce energy instead. He said low oil prices may be weighing on renewable energy sector shares, but it is less of an issue for Covanta than natural gas. Furthermore, Jones said the company is pushing ahead with a sustainable energy plant in Dublin and a state of the art recycling plant in Indianapolis.
