Southwest ends a six-decade policy customers loved.
Transcript:
After nearly 60 years of service, Southwest Airlines is officially getting rid of something its customers love: free checked bags. Starting May 28, the airline will charge $35 for a first checked bag, and $45 for the second.
Free checked bags have been so synonymous with Southwest that the slogan, “bags fly free” became part of its advertising.
But other airlines raked in more than $7 billion in baggage fees last year, and now Southwest is looking to cash in.
When Southwest first announced the change back in March, CEO Bob Jordan said, “We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our shareholders expect.”
Southwest will also make another big change in 2026 when it will end its open-seating model.
