Investors should look for downside protection in their credit portfolios as the great bull run in bonds nears its end, said Steve Mason, portfolio manager for Collins Capital. Mason added that individual investors can protect themselves through long/short bond funds, and they should certainly avoid stretching for yield. He said Collins is finding long opportunities in some industrial and retail names, and short opportunities in the energy patch. As for the U.S. economy, Mason said it is strong enough to withstand a rate hike and the Federal Reserve should take the opportunity to lift rates while it can.
