Clint Henderson, Managing Editor at The Points Guy, explains why you’re going to need to be patient this summer.

Clint Henderson: So what we thought at the Points Guy is that we were going to see a drop off in demand this summer, but volumes are actually basically year over year about the same as they were. So we’re not seeing a huge fall off in demand. In fact, AAA believes that 45 million Americans are going to travel 50 miles or more this year. That would actually be a record. So there might be some economic headwinds, but so far it’s not really dulling Americans desire for travel. Now, that said, some of these trips were booked before we saw some of the economic headwinds that we’re seeing. But I think it’s going to be a huge summer again for travel.
I think people should be prepared for delays and cancellations. We’ve got air traffic control problems, obviously at Newark that’s slowing things down, but ATC issues are going on across the country. It’s not just Newark. In fact, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that these problems at Newark could spread across the country. So that’s something to be very on top of. That said, some of the issues we’ve seen over the previous Summers have gone away, so there’s no shortage of pilots, flight attendants, airport workers. So on that sense, it’s actually a good news story. The problem remains air traffic controllers. That’s been an ongoing issue that will remain an issue for the next several years, but just have a backup plan in mind if you’re traveling this summer Know what other airlines fly the route that you want to fly. Have Use a card to book the trip that has travel insurance protections and you want to just be prepared. Knowledge is power when it comes to summer travel.
