ConAgra foods reported a third quarter loss on Thursday of $952.7 million or $2.23 per share. The packaged foods company earned $0.59 per share, beating analyst estimates, but sales were down 2 percent to $3.88 billion. The makers of Swiss Miss hot chocolate and Slim Jim’s beef jerky took a large hit to their private brands business, incurring a charge of $1.3 billion. ConAgra said business was hurt by the west coast port disruption, which delayed many of its product exports. ConAgra shares are down nearly four percent since the beginning of the year, the strong U.S. dollar has also taken its toll on the bottom line. However the Omaha-based company is expanding its product line and has also raised its earnings projection for 2015.
