It more than doubled what industry experts predicted for its opening weekend.

Movies based on video games have had a solid run at the box office over the past couple of years — and now you can add another winner. “Minecraft” — the adaptation of the 2011 game — smashed expectations as it grossed more than $162 million at domestic box offices in its opening weekend. The film had the strongest opening weekend of any movie thus far in 2025.
“Minecraft” is following the path of other big name video games. According to Comscore, in April 2023, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” opened at $146 million. In October that same year “Five Nights at Freddy’s” debuted at $80 million. And 2022’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” raked in $72 million in its opening weekend.
