When the golden statue is awarded for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards, that Oscar may not be worth as much as you’d think. Analysts say nominees ‘American Sniper’ from Time Warner division Warner Brothers and ‘The Imitation Game’ from The Weinstein Company stand to get the biggest bump at the box office since most other nominees are near the ends of their theatrical runs or are already available on home video. Both films are still playing in a significant number of theaters. But a film’s biggest jump in box office dollars typically comes just after being nominated. As Rentrak estimates that 99% of the $306.5 million box office gross for ‘American Sniper’ came after the Oscar nominations on January 15, ‘The Imitation Game’ is said to be in a better position for any future box office bump.
