Just when did the former CEO of Volkswagen know about the emissions irregularities of its diesel cars? TheStreet went behind the story with New York Times correspondent Jack Ewing, who published an article that stated former chief executive Martin Winterkorn was given a memo in May 2014 that contained information about the problem. According to Ewing, Volkswagen said in a news release that ‘whether or not Mr. Winterkorn read the document, senior Volkswagen management did not realize the gravity’ of the problem. Volkswagen is facing fines that could run into the billions over the incident, in addition to shareholder lawsuits. TheStreet’s Rhonda Schaffler has details from New York.
