350,000 daily commuters will be affected.
Transcript:
One of the country’s largest mass transit systems has come to a screeching halt. 450 members of New Jersey Transit have gone on strike, which could affect as many as 350,000 commuters a day. NJ Transit workers have hit the picket lines over a pay dispute.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the union representing the striking workers, says members of NJ Transit are the lowest-paid locomotive engineers of any major passenger railroads in the U.S..
According to the union, strikers “ have gone without a raise for six years and have been seeking a new contract since October 2019.”
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy says that while both sides want a fair deal, the state is unwilling to make one that would give these 450 workers a better deal than other Transit workers.
