A day after the European Commission’s shock decision to withdraw a long-stalled reform of EU maternity benefits, Spanish Liberal MEP Beatriz Becerra calls the move ‘a big step backwards.’ The EC proposal, adopted in 2008, would have increased the minimum EU maternity leave time from 14 to 18 weeks, replacing a 1992 law that’s till on the books. In an interview at the European Parliament in Brussels, Becerra says it’s high time to change the rules to reflect both the changes in the EU and the role of women in Europe, and that it makes good business sense for companies to add benefits even in these difficult times. As for what happens next, she says EU legislators will set up a working group to look at the issue and press the Commission to come back with a new proposal acceptable to all.
