Each year, prominent economists, money managers and others in the financial community meet in tiny Grand Lake Stream, Maine, for an event known as Camp Kotok. The gathering at Leen’s Lodge is organized by David Kotok, the Chairman and Chief Investment Officer at Cumberland Advisors. It’s part fishing trip, part conference and part vacation for the attendees, who spend their days talking about the economy, financial issues and politics. ‘The idea is to bring a whole robust, diverse viewpoint and talk about it in an easy space,’ explained Kotok. ‘No power points, no lectern, no speeches, just a gathering.’ And at this event, no one is texting or answering emails during those conversations. Internet service is spotty, if you can get it at all. The fish, however, are abundant.
