The roller coaster week for European stocks continued Thursday, August 27, as the region’s main markets followed the U.S. and China higher. In London the FTSE 100 opened up just under 2%, led by building products maker CRH plc, which announced a $1.3 billion deal for Los Angeles window glazing company C.R. Laurence Co. China once again provided the highlight from Asia’s overnight trading as it snapped a five-day losing streak to post a 5.3% gain, the biggest daily rise on the Shanghai Composite in eight weeks. Most of those gains were made in the last hour of trading after the government announced a Friday press conference where it is expected to detail new measures to support markets, while reports have also emerged that the state directly intervened to buy stocks.
