Are you spending this weekend dreaming of cruising out of town? Ready to hop in a fast car and go, the faster the better? We can’t help you get there, but we can tell you about the world’s fastest car – and it’s a General Motors’ (GM) brand. Car and Driver magazine this week revealed the winner of its annual ‘Lightning Lap,’ a race which is conducted each year to determine which sports car tops out at the highest speed. This year’s winner was General Motors’ Chevy Corvette Z06, which mastered a 4.1-mile track at Virginia International Raceway in two minutes and 41 seconds. The Corvette was followed by the McLaren 650S, the Lamborghini Huracan, Porsche’s 911 GT3, and the Mercedes-AMG GT S. Eddie Alterman, editor-in-chief of Car and Driver, said the current crop of performance cars are better than ever. ‘They’re faster than ever, they grip harder than ever, they’re more fuel efficient than ever, and they’re more reliable than ever,’ he said. But can the average car buyer really afford a super-fast sports car? The short answer is yes. ‘The base Corvette starts around $55,000,’ said Alterman. ‘But you can go all the way up to one and a half million dollars, with the Ferrari LaFerrari or the McLaren P1, which are really, really extreme. We call them hyper cars.’
