‘The Martian’ looks set to be an out of this world winner for 20th Century Fox (FOXA) after the space adventure movie directed by Ridley Scott blasted off with a $55 million opening weekend. The box office topping movie got a boost from NASA’s water findings on Mars just days before the release. Based on the novel by Andy Weir, ‘The Martian’ stars Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars and left to fend for himself. The U.S. opening almost equaled that of the award winning 3D epic ‘Gravity’, which took the biggest October box office ever. Sony’s (SNE) ‘Hotel Transylvania’ came in at number 2, the animated sequel pulling in around $33 million, while Lionsgate (LGF) release ‘Sicario’ came in at number 3, taking $12.1 million over the weekend.
