The House Republicans have nominated a new speaker. Nine term Republican congressman Paul Ryan will pick up where John Boehner left off if he’s elected by the full House on Thursday. Ryan was the Republican vice president nominee for Mitt Romney’s failed election campaign in 2012 and has represented Wisconsin’s 1st congressional district since 1999. Having initially said he didn’t want the job, Ryan beat Florida Republican Daniel Webster in the vote for the speaker nomination. He announced at a press conference on Wednesday that: ‘We have an obligation here in the people’s house to do the people’s business,’adding that: ‘We are going to respect the people by representing the people.’ House Republicans are hoping that Ryan will be able to unite the Republican party, whose right wing ‘freedom caucus’ previously caused particular problems for speaker Boehner.
