Some analysts say Lee Tillman’s time to shine could be approaching, if he’s willing to do a deal, writes The Deal’s Claire Poole. Tillman took over as CEO of Marathon Oil Corp. in August 2013 after 24 years at Exxon Mobil Corp. Marathon’s shares closed at $35.20 on Aug. 1, 2013, the day he took over. On Dec. 2 of this year, the stock closed at less than half that, at $16.67 per share. As Claire notes, the oil and gas industry has gone through a lot since Tillman became CEO – oil prices are half of what they were 16 months ago. A lot of oil and gas companies are hurting. Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Fadel Gheit said Marathon Oil needs to cut costs, improve efficiency and consider mergers and acquisitions to improve itself. Tillman has tinkered with what was left at the company from the time of previous CEO Clarence Cazalot, including selling some of the company’s assets, even before the oil price drop.
