UFC 289 became a night to remember as the GOAT walked away from the sport with her two title belts intact after another dominant performance.
The illustrious Amanda Nunes headlined UFC 289 inside Rogers Arena in Vancouver, made her opponent Irene Aldana look like she didn’t belong and then retired as the greatest women’s fighter of all time.
After reclaiming the belt last summer and avenging a submission loss to Julianna Peña, Nunes secured her first bantamweight title defense over Aldana on Saturday with a unanimous decision. Nunes swept every round on all three judges’ scorecards. Then, with a smile on her face during her postfight interview with Daniel Cormier she announced her retirement from mixed martial arts.
Saturday’s pay-per-view also included the highly anticipated bout between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush. On paper, the lightweight showdown was the most interesting and potentially thrilling fight of the evening and it delivered.
Oliveira, the former UFC lightweight champion, bounced back from his title loss to Islam Makhachev last October with a first-round finish of Dariush, who had entered the bout on an eight-fight winning streak.
