MSA Safety’s focus is to create products to protect people at work and in dangerous environments. The company makes everything from hard hats to gas detection instruments. Right now, the product they’re most excited about is one they spent more than $50 million developing. The G1 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for firefighters went on sale in late 2014 and has seen sales climb 28% for the first six months of 2016. MSA CEO William Lambert says, ‘We have close to 50,000 units in service around the world. From Saudi Arabia to Chile and Australia. One out of every two incoming orders that we receive is a competitive conversion, which we’re really happy and proud about.’ One of the reasons MSA’s G1 has been selling well is that municipal fire departments around the country are in a replacement cycle for their equipment. In the years following 9/11 municipal fire departments received billions of dollars in funding to upgrade their equipment and now, that equipment is being replaced. The G1 includes a thermal imaging camera and software that can be updated via the cloud.
