President Trump has created a “committee of inquiry” to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made false statements after the White House accused her of mortgage fraud.
“As President, it is my job to ensure the laws are faithfully executed, including by firing subordinates who cannot be trusted to tell the truth and follow the law,” Trump wrote in an announcement dated Oct. 7 and shared on the White House’s social media Friday.
“To assist me in carrying out that responsibility, the Committee shall investigate the allegations against Governor Cook and report to me whether there is ‘cause’ for Governor Cook’s removal.”
It’s a notable escalation in the president’s repeated efforts to fire Cook, a nominee of former President Joe Biden, after the Supreme Court in June blocked him from doing so.
At the time, Trump wrote that the case “was sent back by the Supreme Court on a strictly procedural basis.”
The commander-in-chief first tried to fire Cook on Aug. 25, 2025, after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte accused her of committing mortgage fraud.
Cook has denied wrongdoing. She sued to block her removal.
